Hi Everyone... this  is what happened this  morning:

We had no visiting Rotarians  but we had guests!  Jeanne Matlock brought Jack Matlock and Cecily Harris.  Wendy Heck brought Tom Zurbriggen as her guest and Adolfo, our exchange student came for breakfast as well.

Jason told us he has just learned that May 2020 will be the  opening of the Lift Bridge Celebration and possibly the same weekend as Brewers Bazaar...how cool would that be??  Stay tuned for more information.

There will be BBB post event summary meeting in the near future.  If you would like to come and provide feedback let Jason or Jerry O'Connell know to include you on the invite/coordination.

The Rotarian in the spotlight today was Jeanne Matlock.  This is the portion of the meeting where we find out something about our fellow Rotarians we previously did not know.  We found out that Jeanne  competed in an international judo tournament, has alpine skiied in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy, but never in the US.   However she did NOT play the trumpet in the Junior Symphony of Oklahoma City...she played the violin!

Adolfo, our exchange student, shared his thoughts with us regarding his experience this past year.  He feels that people go through lots of cycles in their lives and sometimes they open the door and take advantage of those cycles and other times the door remains closed and opportunities are missed.  He opened the door to an absolutely amazing year in his life here in Stillwater and is so genuinely grateful for the chance to do all the things he did and experience all the wonderful places and people he encountered .  Adolfo thanked Rotary for all the support he received from Wendy and Jeff and his host families.  He will be returning home soon but feels the cycle is not complete and he is leaving the ajar.  For that we are all grateful.  (There are two really cute pictures of Adolfo and Wendy and Jeff with hats that he gave them.  I will send them in a separate email).

Our speaker today was Dr. Wendy Heck who shared with us her experiences during  3 weeks in Panama where she worked with Floating Doctors.  Floating Doctors is an organization begun in 2010 after the earthquakes in Haiti and has continued to this day. Basically medical professionals from all over the world have an opportunity to volunteer to work with indigenous people ( the Ngobe people in this case ) in remote areas of Panama.  The villages for the most part have no running water and no electricity.  The medical care available there is spotty to say the least so when these volunteers arrive and set up shop the people are very thankful.  Wendy had a wonderful presentation where she showed how difficult it was for the teams to get to their "patients" and what living conditions were for like for them.  [Think outhouses at the worst campground you have ever been at and then multiply that by ten...that's an editorial comment. ] The volunteers tended to people in Nursing Homes, did single day and multi-day clinics, provided dental care and even veterinary care for the local animals.  Common complaints among the natives are headaches, diabetes, hypertension, rashes, visual complaints and stomach aches.  Teenage pregnancy is also a problem as well as the spread of AIDS.  Kudos to  Wendy for all the good work she has done there!

Next week we will be doing our Service Project under the capable hand of Nancy Lyner--should be fun.  See you all there.

At the conclusion of today's meeting, Jason sent us out, as always ---to Be The Inspiration!
