Hi Everyone... here is what happened this  morning:

This morning Gary Campbell from the Anoka Club was our visiting Rotarian and Ted Nesse brought his aunt, Virginia Rovelstad as his guest.

Bob opened the meeting with a few announcements from club members:

Roger Ruetten passed around a sign up sheet for those members who want to pre-pay for raffle tickets.  He will bill your account $50.  I'm sure you can email Roger and ask to be put on the list if you missed the sign-up.
Bob Gray told us to mark our calendars for Saturday October 26th which is the District 5960 One Rotary Summit which will be held at Family Means in Stillwater.

During the Sergeant at Arms portion of the meeting we found out that there are more anniversaries celebrated in September than was reported in last week's newsletter.  Jack and Jeannette Gibbs will celebrate 62 years of marriage and Mark and Val Fisher will mark their 42nd anniversary .  Jerry McConnell attended his 50th 8th grade Reunion.  And I was remiss in not reporting that our very own Rick Robbins is now the new Executive Director of the Partnership Plan.  Congrats to all!

Our speaker this morning was Brian Mueller, Chief Deputy of Washington County.  He explained to us that the Sheriff's office does a lot more in the community than just patrol the streets.  They provide school resource officers, form drug and sex trafficking task forces, have SWAT teams and answer many many 911 calls.  Additionally they patrol lakes, rivers and trails, as well as providing  protection of our Washington County courts .   Today Deputy Mueller focused on three specific topics that Washington Country has been dealing with. The first topic is sex trafficking and he told us that within 24 hours after running away  kids are performing sex acts in return for food, clothing and shelter.  Big events such as the Super Bowl attract many traffickers and the East Metro Task Force, the first formed in the state, has been effective in combating this problem.  The second very important topic is Mental Illness and Mental Health.  There have been many cases of suicide among First Responders and the goal is to eliminate the stigma of mental illness.  It is "okay not to be okay" and so the County is providing services both internally and externally driven by employees themselves to provide support. The Crisis Response Unit is available 24/7 to respond to mental health issues.  The third topic is the rampant use of opioids and drugs.   The goal is prevention, education and enforcement and to put the drug dealer in jail for a long time.  All these drugs add to the mental health crisis and he told us that heroin deaths outnumber gunshot deaths.  It is a very complicated issue.  The Sheriff's office is in  partnership with Lakeview Hospital providing drop off areas for unused medications and prescription drugs people have lingering in their medicine cabinets. Methanphetamines  are king in Washington County and the Twin Cities is now the hub for distribution of this drug.  A relationship with Hazeltine and the Betty Ford clinic is being established to help people who need help.  The goal is to make Washington County a Wellness Community.

Next week our speaker will be Tom Hubler an author  who will speak about the soul of family business...how one generation passes down a business to the next generation.
At the close of the meeting, Bob told us all to have a good week.
