Hi Everyone... here is what happened this  morning:

This morning Larry Propst from the Woodbury  Club was our visiting Rotarian and Ken McGinley brought his brother  Mike  as his guest.

Bob opened the meeting with a few announcements from club members:

Larry Propst from the Woodbury Club was here representing the District.  He presented   a check for $3,200 for the Dementia Friendly Virtual Reality program to Arba Della Beck  representing  Family Means.  Hopefully that equipment can be brought to the club one morning so we can experience virtually what it is like to have dementia.

Our speaker this morning was Tom Hubler and his topic was the soul of family business.  Tom told us that 95% of businesses in our country are family owned small businesses and that they are the backbone of our economy.  The bad news is that 70% of them will fail from the first to the second generation of owners.  Some causes for that are family issues, financial differences within the family and that  no escape from the business.  In other words , all the family talks about is the family business .  Mom and Dad and the adult children differ on organizational problems, blame one another and ultimately blame divides the family.  So a business plan is necessary with the goal to create win/win situations and not be problem focused.  Tom suggests a variety of ways to achieve this.   The main premise is to embody the essence of your company and the essence is your soul.  Have a common family vision supported by prayers, spirituality and psychic energy.  Develop positive communication among family members and hone conflict management skills...talk and listen to each other.  Recognize the last challenge of entrepreneurship--when to retire and decide who will then run the company.  Have a family participation plan and lay the ground rules.  Be aware of the legacy you want to leave with the family which will be a gift to future generations and define your success.  Most of all develop forgiveness and don't take each other for granted.  Conduct regular family meetings, love and promote the spiritual well being of one another and  adopt an attitude of gratitude resulting in philanthropy and appreciation of your blessings.  Tom has written a book about all of this and more information may be found at www.hublerfamilybusiness.com.

Next week the speakers will be Drs. Mike and Beth Adams and their topic will be their experiences providing medical services in rural New Zealand.  Paula Williams is the host.

At the end of the meeting Bob Gray wished us all a good day.
