Hi Everyone... here is what happened this  morning:

This morning the visiting Rotarian was Russ Michaletz who is our speaker and also the District Governor for District 5950.  We also welcomed Raina Fox who is a Peace Fellow.  Raina will be giving us a video presentation on October 29th...something to really look forward to.

Bob opened the meeting with a few announcements :

The Halloween Parade at Boutwell's Landing will be on Wednesday October 23rd.  A sign up sheet was passed around.

The District 5960 One Rotary Summit will be at Family Means on Saturday October 26th

Ed Boeve announced that Rake a Difference will be on Saturday October 26th.

Mark Lambert sent around a sign up sheet for Roadside Clean Up which will be on October 19th .  Due to poor weather conditions the original date was cancelled so the clean up will be on the 19th weather permitting.

The Rotary Foundation Dinner will be held on Saturday November 2nd.  Lonny Stormo send around a sign up sheet for those who are planning to attend.

Jeanne Matlock was please to announce that the website for ending human trafficking is now up and running.  Check it out at www.RotaryEndHT.org.

The Rotarian in the Spotlight today was Mary Parcheta .  This is the portion of the meeting where we find out something about a Club member we previously did not know.  Today we found out that Mary has 6 water ski National Championships plus 7 National NASTAR ( not to be confused with NASCAR) racing championship.  NASTAR is the heart and soul of ski racing. She also raised 100 head of white face herefords and showed  them at a state fair.  She did hike up a 14,000 foot mountain but it was in Wyoming, NOT Colorado.

Our speaker this morning was  Russ Michaletz who  spoke about how to enhance the value of Rotary membership or in other words how we can  benefit from being Rotarians.   A very big concern in Rotary today is the steady decline in membership.  Russ told us that clubs on the whole bring in roughly 350 new members each year and sadly lose 360 members each year.  So retention is the issue and Russ has made it his goal to find our why people leave Rotary and how that problem can be solved.  People join Rotary for a variety of reasons, but the main ones are to give back and  to network.  People stay in Rotary because of emotional reasons such as enjoying the fellowship of the club, feeling  fulfilled by doing good things for others and also find pride in advancing themselves.  Sometimes Rotarians will develop a club within the club such as a singing group and then find great pleasure and pride in performing for others.  So how to keep members??  Russ feels that there should be more focus on the needs of our members and that networking is the way to go.  Our Four Way Test is a huge asset when trying to create trustworthiness  in the business world when members are trying to advance their careers.  Some suggestions on how to accomplish this goal of retention is to get a champion within the club to start a mentorship program  for members who are trying to advance their careers and  get/give advice for making major decisions in their lives.  For those struggling with the problem of retention this is really food for thought.

Next week our speaker will be our very own Jon Stillman who will give us the Annual Polio Plus Update Presentation.

At the end of the meeting Bob Gray wished us all a good day.
