Hi Everyone... here is what happened this  morning:

This morning we had no visiting Rotarians  and no guests.

Bob Gray opened the meeting with a few announcements :

The  annual Holiday Party will be December 3rd from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at The Lakes at Stillwater.  NO morning meeting that day.

The Club Service Project will be Meals from the Heart, Tuesday December 10th. 6:45 am to 8:00 am.

The School Board  recognized the great work that David Waldschmidt and his team did with the  Media Center and Reading Program at Rutherford and Stonebridge Elementary schools at 6pm last Thursday at City Hall.  David noted that it was a great meeting and wonderful public relations for Rotary.

There was also a reminder to bring  four $1 bills on November 26th...2 for Lonny's Foundation Challenge, 1 for the raffle and 1 for the Sergeant at Arms.

Bob make us aware of a Career Exploration at Oak Land Middle School on Wednesday through Thursday, January 22-23, 2020.  The organizers are looking for speakers who can make presentations to the students regarding a variety of careers they might want to pursue.  If you have an interest and want more information please check out the website www.stillwaterschools.org/pathways.  The sponsors are The Stillwater Area Community Foundation (SACF).

Our speakers today were  Jeanne and Jack Matlock who spoke about their experience in 2010 when they went on a Rotary Friendship Exchange trip to South Africa. Also on the trip were Arba Della, Mel Sullivan, former member Cheryl Kohut and Jingle Mahan.  Friendship Exchanges are international in nature and want to promote peace, understanding and good will by experiencing cultures in other places of the world by living with Rotary host families.  The Matlocks with the others spent 2 weeks on the western Cape and then went to Kruger National Park.  Jeanne described how their experience with the host family is  much different  than how most of the population actually lives.  The majority of South Africans (non-white) live in Townships or "Informal Housing"  or from looking at the pictures a better word might be slums. Roughly 9-16 million people live in squalor and poverty,  As the group traveled around they were able see Table Mountain which has the world's largest cable car, Robben Island which is the jail where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for years and many other fascinating places.  On the list of highlights were wineries, bird rescue sanctuaries, river boat rides and a safari.  Along the way they visited Rotary Clubs who had projects supported by the Foundation most of which help with the education of children.   The presentation ended with a wonderful slide show of the many places Jeanne described along with the animals they saw on the safari in Kruger National Park.  Everyone on the trip had a wonderful time!

Next week our speaker will be Lonnie Stormo, our Foundation Chair and he will give a presentation on the Annual Foundation Month...don't forget to bring extra dollars!

At the end of the meeting Bob Gray  wished us all a good day.
