Hi Everyone... this  is what happened this  morning:

We had no visiting Rotarians  but we had two guests...Jack Matlock and Vince Greiner husband of Eli.

Jason began the meeting ( his next to the last which he pointed out quite a few times this morning) by letting us know that next year on May 16, 2020 there will be the opening of the Lift Bridge Celebration and that 6200 people are expected to be in attendance .  Coincidentally that is when our BBB Event is scheduled .  He feels this would be a great opportunity to make ourselves and Rotary in general more visible to the community.  So our homework is to be thinking of some ways we can promote awareness to coincide with this event.  We have a whole year almost to come up with something...so thinking caps on!!

Also at the BBB  ( Brewers and Bourbon Bazaar) post event summary ideas were tossed around regarding re-branding our posters for the event as well as increasing prices and removing online user fees.  It was also suggested that we look at some different food options and reduce the quantities of what we had this past year.

Jason gave a shout out to Dave Waldschmidt for his work this year organizing the volunteers at the Media Centers at both Rutherford and Stonebridge Elementary schools. The goal is to expand the reading program for next year.  Many thanks to all who volunteered this year--the librarians were very grateful for all the help.

Jeff Nelson informed us that on June 27th there will be another Thirsty Thursday and it will be at the Seven Vineyards in Grant.  He will send follow up details via email so stay tuned...

Paula Williams updated us on the picnic this year.  It will NOT be in Pioneer Park as in days gone by, but will be at The Lakes which is Bill Howell's project on Highway 12 going out of town.  Many thanks to Bill for arranging this and Paul for organizing.  Should be a lot of fun!

During the Sergeant at Arms portion of the meeting Craig Leiser announced that he and Nina will be celebrating 55 years of married bliss this coming week.  Congrats to both of them!   Bill Miller thanked everyone for their emails and cards and kind words and funny jokes  he received while recovering from his last bout in the hospital.

Below find some important dates to be aware of:

This morning our speaker was Kiernan McNulty who is an anthropology professor at the University of Minnesota.  His topic was the Origin and Evolution of Apes and Humans.  He told us how he is both an anthropologist and a paleontologist which translates as...he studies humans and cultures and digs up fossils.  His presentation included explanations of how anthropologists are able to use high tech methods and three dimensional measurements to study human and ape evolution.  The main area of his research is in Kenya, Africa , specifically on Rusinga also known as the Island of the Apes.  There scientists have found literally thousands of fossils dating back 20 millions of years .  It was there that the Leakeys found an ape skull years ago.  Professor McNulty's  group also found a partial ape skull and named that one Ekembo. The end goal is to get the big picture determining how old the fossils are and what other habitats and animals and plants were there those millions of years ago and how ultimately we humans came to be.  That is a project that will last more than a lifetime.
Besides fossils found on  Rusinga, there are also people living there and sadly they have a very high incidence of HIV. Consequently there are many orphaned children living there and three years ago Professor McNulty started a school for these children and named it in honor of his mom and dad-- The Kathy and Mike McNulty Academy. It is thriving and not only taking care of the children but  the adult inhabitants as well.

Next week we will have the passing of the gavel to our brand new president...Bob Gray.
At the conclusion of today's meeting, Jason sent us out for the last time ---to Be The Inspiration!
