Hi Everyone... here is what happened this  morning:

This morning we had no visiting Rotarians and no guests.

Bob Gray opened the meeting with a few announcements :

Jon Stillman gave us an update on Craig Leiser.  Craig had a successful hip replacement last week but unfortunately had complications.  He developed pneumonia and is now in Lakeview Hospital.   Keep  Craig in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers.

Wendy Heck continued to  challenge us, as a member of the Climate Change Committee, to obtain at least one reusable shopping bag and use it at least once in December and into January... there will be fines if you don't!!

Rick Robbins invited us to come to the DaVinci Fest on Saturday January 25th between 1 and 4 at Stillwater High School.  Rick also told us that The Partnership Plans is now accepting nominations for Partnership Awards.  Nominate a teacher/staff member deserving of recognition for creating wonder in the classroom.  All current and past employees of School District 834 who haven't already won a Partnership Award are eligible for nomination for the 2019-2020 school year. Winners will receive a $1000 grant to give to a school.  To submit a nomination visit the website Partnershipplan.org/The-Partnership-Awards.  Nominations are due February 7,2020.

Nancy Lyner told us about the 30th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. breakfast on Monday January 20 from 7-9:30 am at St. Peter's United Church of Christ which is located at 111 Orleans St. South in Stillwater.  The keynote speaker will be former Attorney General Eric Holder.  Tickets are $5, children under 12 are free.  For tickets go to MLKBreakfast.com or stpetersstillwater.org  .  651-439-2160

John Lennes informed us again about the Traditional Swedish Dinner( reassuring us that no Swedes will be eaten)  on Thursday January 16th at Christ Lutheran Church  located at 150 Fifth Street in Marine on St. Croix.  John also very thoughtfully  left  zip loc bags on all the tables this morning .  You can bring them to the dinner and you are welcome to to bring home leftover lutefisk, meatballs, cookies...you get the idea.  Need more info?  go to clcmarine.org or call 651-433-3222.

The Rotarian in the Spotlight this morning was Carol Parendo.  This is the portion of the meeting where we get to know our club members and find our something about them we did not already know.  Today we found out that Carol  biked the Rockies with her son and that over 7 days they biked 434 miles and nearly 30,000 feet of climbing.   Carol is also in the Guiness Book of World Records for being part of the world's largest marching band...her high school days.  And finally we found out that her dog, Nike did NOT get 3rd place in an AKC agility contest.

During the Sergeant at Arms part of the meeting, Jon Stillman, Mr Packer himself, donned a Green Bay Packer helmet ( circa ??) and  became chief Cheerleader to lead us in a "GO PACK" cheer!    His only regret was that Rich Cummings wasn't there to hear it!

Our speaker today was Cindy Parsons, the executive director of St. Croix Family Resources and Youth Connections.  There is a Youth Drop In Center at St.Paul Lutheran Church in Stillwater which opened in September 2018, had it's first youth in October 2018 and to date has 37 youth come on a regular basis.  Last fall a second drop in center was opened in Cottage Grove with only one youth so far.  Homelessness in the suburbs is different from homelessness in the cities so a different approach is necessary.  Youths ages 13-24 experiencing housing instability are able to get assistance at these centers to meet basic needs such as food, clothing, showers, laundry and connections to resources.  Cindy pointed out that a current need is to get the word out to homeless youth and to strengthen relationships.  Family conflict is the biggest cause of youth homelessness with other causes being aging out of foster care and the lack of affordable housing. The drop in center in Stillwater is open every Monday and Thursday from 2pm to 5pm.  The center in Cottage Grove  is open every Tuesday from 3pm-6pm and that center is located at All Saints Lutheran Church, 8100 Belden Blvd.  For more information call 612-475-4055 or go to office@stcroixfrc.org.   You can also download the YSNMN app onto your smart phone for free.  That is a project of the Youth Services Network of MN.

Next week our speaker will be Tom Ballis, Deputy Fire Chief whose topic will be Heart Safe Commnity.  Lynda Halbert will host.

At the end of the meeting Bob Gray wished us all a good day.
