Croixdale

In 2006, our club had the opportunity to help The Croixdale Senior Community obtain a Video Magnifier.

Croixdale, in Bayport has 130 senior adults that live in the Senior Apartments, Assisted Living and Memory units at Croixdale. Of the 130 residents at least 22 have significant visual impairment caused by Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, and other eye conditions. and would likely make frequent use of video magnification equipment if it were available.

Croixdale currently offers a number of programs aimed at residents with visual problems. For instance, large print games (bingo, playing cards, puzzles), large pull down screen in community room, and large print books in the resident’s library including talking books. The Croixdale staff works closely with the Bayport Library to bring in large print books every month for the residents. Weekly the Activity Director reads ’News for You’ reads aloud to the residents.

With all that is being done for those with visual impairment, what the residents needed was a device that can magnify photographs, medicine bottles, bills, checks (so they can see where to sign their names) newspapers and the like.

Our club submitted and received a District Simplified Grant which allowed us to purchase and deliver the devide to Croixdale.

With the success of the Croixdale project in 2006, our club looked to share that experience with another local center. Stillwater's Golden Livingcenter - Linden provided us the opportunity to help their residents by purchasing a video magnifier.

On Friday, April 11th, 2008, Club President Orwin Carter and Community Service Director Mark Fisher met the Linden residents and staff to demonstrate the magnifier's use. Mark Fisher was instrumental in coordinating this project by writing and submitting the District 5960 Simplified Grant application.

With the combination of a $1,400 contribution from our club and a $1,000 from the DSG, we were able to purchase the video magnifier for Linden. The District Simplified Grant program is funded through the Rotary Foundation.

Linden's Executive Director, Jenny Allen thanked our club for our service and the residents showed their appreciation through their excitement to use the device.
